The BBC version is great and more accessible, but you lose the loving devotion to reproducing the exact language of Tolstoy that Bondarchuk gives you. I’m also open to being suggested other versions, if you have a strong argument. It will help me even more to hear how each version handles the characters and the plot (also what is left in and what is taken out). She won’t be reading the thread, so feel free to talk about specific aspects of the plot. Keep in mind that my wife knows nothing of the book and I want her to enjoy it as much as me. So, for those of you who have seen both, which one would you recommend we watch and why? I don’t usually have such a hard time deciding on these things, but the two films kind of balance out for me in terms of the pros and cons (from what I know). I’ve heard good and bad things about both. The two main versions I’m going between are the newly restored 1967 (Sergei Bondarchuk) or the 2016 BBC miniseries. However, I'm really caught up on deciding which version I should watch. ![]() I really enjoyed it and I want to watch a film/tv version of it with my wife because I want to share the story with her and I know she will probably never read it (or if she does it will be years from now). I just recently finished reading War and Peace.
